Newer Bigger Location

Axleboy is pleased to announce that after 12 years of business, in the St. Peters area, they have relocated to a significantly larger and more accommodating facility only a few miles West.

On January 1, 2017, Scott Carline, owner and president of Axle Boy Enterprises, LLC dba Axleboy, received possession of the building and land located at 1935 E. Terra Ln. in O’Fallon, Missouri.  In the weeks that followed, extensive renovations began to reshape both the production and showroom areas, to bring them in line with OSHA and Axleboy standards.

Axleboy officially stopped all production on January 9, 2017 at the Ehlmann Rd. address so that larger equipment and computer systems could be moved to the new location.  Within the relatively short timeframe of one week, Axleboy was appropriately staffed and able to resume full service and production efforts on January 16, 2017.

As of January 20, 2017 Missouri’s self-proclaimed Jeep and off-road authority is open and operational with only minor cosmetic updates still in progress.

ReadyBrake Towing System

Axleboy is glad to announce that they are now authorized dealers of the ReadyBrake system, developed by N.S.A. RV Products Inc. The Ready Brake system offers a safe and reliable means of towing your Jeep, car, truck or other vehicle behind an RV by interlinking the towed vehicle’s brakes to those of the RV.

 

How does the ReadyBrake work?

“When you apply brakes in your RV the towed vehicle surges forward actually pushing your RV.  ReadyBrake uses this energy to move a lever forward.  A cable is connected to this lever and the other end is clamped to your towed vehicle brake pedal.  When the lever moves forward the brake pedal is pulled down and when you drive the RV forward again it allows the lever to move backward and the brake pedal goes back up releasing the towed vehicle brakes.”

How is ReadyBrake different from other systems?

“ReadyBrake is a mechanical system that does not drain your towed vehicle battery because it needs no power to work.  To connect and disconnect ReadyBrake means to connect or disconnect a cable that drapes over the tow bar, while those electronic brakes have to be placed in front of your driver seat and then have to be adjusted each time and then you have to remove all of this when you are ready to drive.  The biggest difference is the price.  Considering ReadyBrake sells for less than half of what the electronic tow brakes do and it’s more reliable, easier to use and has a lifetime warranty the difference in value is clear to see.”

Can You Install This For Me?

Every so often we’ll have a customer come in with a Jeep full of parts that they just ordered online and ask us how much it will cost to have it all installed.  We are excited that people continue to take an interest in modifying their Jeeps and that our reputation for quality workmanship has spread throughout the Jeep community.  We don’t like to turn away opportunities to work on Jeeps, but in 2015 we adopted a fairly standard industry policy regarding parts installation.

Our installation policy, in its most basic form, is this:

“We do not install customer supplied parts.”

Regardless if you purchased your parts direct from Jeep or through Quadratec, e-bay, Amazon or Craigslist, we simply don’t install customer supplied parts.  For those interested in knowing the “why” behind this policy, we offer a general explanation below.

Installing Customer Supplied Parts is Bad for Business.

We’re not saying that the stuff customers find online is cheap or low quality or that it won’t work.  Plenty of people buy stuff online, install it in their garage and are perfectly happy.  We are happy for these folks and enjoy spending time on the trails with them.

The reasons we don’t install customer supplied parts are both legal and business in nature.  In terms of legality, the state of Missouri holds shops (like Axleboy) responsible for all aspects of a job, including parts and labor, regardless of where the parts originate.  So, even if we, as a shop, were to install a customer’s parts as specified by the manufacturer, if the part itself failed, legally, we would be held liable.  It sounds ridiculous…until it happens.

From the business perspective, Axleboy and other professional shops exist because there is some element of profitability that allows us to purchase specific tools, pay certified technicians and maintain a brick and mortar location. Remove marginal profitability and reputable off-road shops will quickly disappear.  That doesn’t sound like a very good business plan to us.

Our Reputation is Based on Quality. Quality People. Quality Parts. Quality Service.

At Axleboy, we work hard to build and maintain quality working-relationships with several aftermarket manufacturers, so that when parts don’t fit right or packages arrive with damaged or incomplete sets, we can still get the job done right and in a timely manner.  Our sights are focused on total quality and customer satisfaction.  When customers go to online vendors to save a couple bucks, they unknowingly interfere with our ability to guarantee quality.  This is a reputational risk that we are simply unwilling to accept.

We want you to know, that we don’t think anything less of people or Jeepers for purchasing parts online.  Please understand when we politely decline to install them.

Choosing the Perfect Lift

Congratulations! You’ve got a new Jeep and now you’re ready to make it a one-of-a-kind custom ride.  Aftermarket suspension, tires, wheels, bumpers, LED lights and more.  With so many available upgrades and custom accessories, almost anything is possible.

We see hundreds of Jeeps every year, and enjoy guiding people as they take their ride through the transition from stock to stud.  Most folks that we see, buy a new Jeep with the intention of using it as a full-time daily driver and part-time off-road warrior; for camping, hunting, fishing, organized off-roading etc.  Sound familiar?

One of the first modifications on their “to do” list is: Raise the ride.  We think of this as a hinge decision that will effect almost every other major upgrade/modification, including tires size, axle upgrades and more.  One of the most common introductory Jeep lifts installed at Axleboy is the 2.5” Teraflex suspension lift.

Like we mentioned, the 2.5” Teraflex suspension lift is an introductory lift.  That being said, it offers a modest amount of additional clearance and is capable of tackling many off-road trails without losing the functionality you would expect from a daily driver.  Here are just a few points to consider before deciding on a 2.5″ liftt:

  • It provides enough lift to comfortably fit up to a 35” tire
  • It gives plenty of clearance to tackle most light-medium rated trails
  • Maintains low center of gravity
  • Fewer parts to install help keep costs down
  • Same/one-day installation
  • Excellent ride quality
  • No significant changes to drive line angles

Every inch of clearance counts when you are taking the road less traveled…but what about every ½ inch?  Before going for that additional ½ inch of clearance with a 3” lift consider this:

  • Changes in drive line angles may require a new front drive shaft
  • Additional parts involved in the lift amount to higher parts and labor costs
  • Comfortably fits up to a 35” tire
  • Allows for plenty of flex under the wheel well
  • Install may take up to 2 days

Do you want to roll with the big dogs and go places that no stock Jeep would ever dream? Going bigger on both lift and tires may be the answer.  With a minimum 4” lift:

  • There is now enough space to fit 37” tires
  • Serious consideration should be given to upgrading both front and rear axles
  • We strongly recommend new front and rear drive shafts
  • Bigger tires will necessitate re-gearing the differential ratios. Proper gearing will give back some of the power that is lost when increasing tire circumference.
  • Significantly more parts (flex arms, brackets, exhaust spacer, etc) increases the overall cost of installation
  • Proper installation may take 3-4 days (actual install time may vary)
  • Be aware that your Jeep will have a higher center of gravity and you may not fit in the parking garage any more
  • Your Jeep will be nearly unstoppable off-road and you’ll be the envy of everyone you work with

How to Plan a Successful Jeeping Year

Every year, millions of people around the world set New Year’s resolutions…and more than 50% either give up on or forget about their goals withing the first three months.  We asked ourselves, “Why? Why aren’t more people sticking to their guns and following through with their resolutions?”

The answer: We think people give up on their New Year’s resolutions because they simply aren’t fun.

OUR RESOLUTION for 2016 is to have a blast and spend more time on the trails and at off-road events than we have in the past decade!!  It’s going to be great.  Here’s a list of 7 things to consider if you want to share our resolution this year:

Step 1:  Determine which events you want to participate in.

  • Suspension (a little extra lift does wonders for flexibility)

  • Add recovery gear (Winch, tow straps, D-rings, etc)

Step 5: Map out locations and distance between gas stations.

  • It’s no secret that your Jeep can go just about anywhere…except past a gas station.  We don’t want you to get stuck in the middle of Oklahoma with an empty tank and 50 miles to the nearest gas station, and neither do your passengers.

Step 6:  Gather up your friends or family and hit the road.

  • It’s always more fun when other people are along for the ride.  Somebody’s gotta get out to take the pictures, right?

Step 7:  Enjoy the ride…and make it back to work by ___________.

Fall Wheeling

10 Things to Take Wheeling in the Fall

It has been a great wheeling season so far this year, and with Fall in full swing we’re glad to say, “The best is yet to come!”  Cooler temperatures and foliage on the trail present an interesting new twist to the off-road experience.  We want you and your passengers to have a safe and enjoyable time wheeling this Fall.

Before you head out to explore new trails or roll through your favorite wilderness playground we recommend checking your rig for the following must-have items:

  1. Tow Straps (looped ends…not hooks)- Any time you’re going out on the trail with any other Jeepers, it’s a good idea to pack along at least one loop-ended tow strap.  Nobody plans to get stuck on the trail, but sometimes the forces of nature catch us off guard.
  2. Tow Hooks (D-ring)- Why take the chance of having a tow strap slip off an open end hook? We’re all about safe wheeling and strongly encourage the use of D-ring style tow points.
  3. Full Size Spare Tire- The last thing you want to see when you puncture or tear out the sidewall on your oversize tires is an undersized sized spare.
  4. Jack- The best type of jack to use with your Jeep is the one that came with it.  Of course, once you lift your Jeep and put on big tires, your jack will need some modification or assistance to reach an effective height. Another option is the Hi-Lift jack.  These jacks are significantly less stable, and should be used with extreme caution.
  5. Winch– You might not be the sort to push the limits, but when you find yourself in a jam, having a reliable winch can be just the thing you need to make it up, over or around an obstacle.
  6. Tree Saver– We’re not as extreme as some folks, and we don’t expect you to be either.  Tree savers allow you to use a tree trunk as a winch anchor point and cause minimal damage to the tree (so others can use it in the future) and to your winch cable.
  7. Trail Cleaning Equipment- Things like a shovel, kitty litter, super absorbent pads and moisture-proof waste bags are a must have.  Jeeping is all about enjoying nature and going where other vehicles simply cannot.  The last thing we want to do is harm the environment with spilled oil, antifreeze or other fluids.
  8. Tool bag/box- It’s better to have a bag of tools and not need them, than to need a tool and know exactly where it is in the garage at home.
  9. CB Radio– More than just a way to be chatty (and sometimes obnoxious ) with friends, the CB radio is a safety tool that can be used to warn other Jeepers of hazardous trail conditions or send out a distress call.
  10. Blanket and/or Coat– During the day, the weather might be just right…but if you’re out on the trail when the sun starts to go down, temperatures can quickly drop.  Having a jacket and or blanket in the back can help keep you and your passengers more comfortable if you find yourself running behind or (worst case scenario) stranded over night.

Warranty Fact or Fiction

Mopar Lift Kits and Performance Parts

As Missouri’s off-road authority the guys at Axleboy are regularly asked about the Mopar lift kit.  Several dealership salesmen are indicating during the sales process that “Mopar lift kits are the only lift covered or approved under the manufacturer’s warranty.”

Sales people say a lot of things…some of which is absolutely true and much of which is less so. In considering what has been said about the Mopar lift, we feel obligated to point out that this particular lift is considered a “Mopar performance part,” identified as a part number that begins with the letter “P.”

Why is this significant?  Well, if you have a few minutes, call up the dealership parts department and ask them what the warranty is on Mopar performance parts.  You may be surprised with their response.

Still curious, but not interested in calling the dealership?  We’ve included an excerpt from page 38 of the of the Mopar Performance Catalog, which states:

MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTS LIMITED WARRANTY

NO PARTS WARRANTY – “AS IS”

“Mopar Performance parts are sold “as is” unless otherwise noted. This means that parts sold by Mopar Performance carry no warranty whatsoever. Implied warranties, such as warranties of merchantability are excluded. (An implied warranty of merchantability means that the part is reasonably fit for the general purpose for which it was sold.) The entire risk as to quality and performance of such parts is with the buyer. Should such parts prove defective following their purchase, the buyer and not the manufacturer, distributor or retailer, assumes the entire cost of all necessary servicing or repair. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep® and Ram vehicle and parts warranties are voided if the vehicle or parts are used for competition. The addition of performance parts does not by itself void a vehicle’s warranty. However, added performance parts (parts not originally supplied on the vehicle from the factory) are not covered by the vehicle’s warranty, and any failure that they may cause is not covered by the vehicle’s warranty.”

New Parts Policy

Experiencing a vehicle breakdown can be both stressful and expensive.  One way that some folks attempt to alleviate the financial burden of paying for repairs is by ordering and supplying their own parts.

It’s nearly impossible for local shops to compete with the majority of prices found on sites like Amazon, Ebay and Northridge4x4. For the DIY or shade-tree mechanic, this offers an easy way to cut costs, but we’re finding more and more legitimate businesses are turning down work to install “customer supplied” parts.

Work is work, right? So who cares where the parts come from?  There was a time when we would have agreed and gladly taken any type of work that came through the door.

For the past couple of years, we have struggled to find that perfect balance between quantity and our commitment to quality.  At long last, we have reached the determination that quality is truly our primary corporate social responsibility.  With that being said, Axleboy no longer installs “customer supplied” parts.

This decision was reached based on the following factors:

  1. Axleboy has spent years developing and maintaining vendor relationships.  This is significant because when our technicians have problems with how a part installs or performs on a vehicle, we can obtain technical support, send it back and/or negotiate product upgrades.
  2. Incorrect parts cost too much time and money for everyone involved.  If we are doing anything on a vehicle related to suspension or drivetrain, once we put that vehicle on the lift, it tends to stay there until the job is complete.  When a customer supplies their own parts and things don’t match up perfectly, production comes to a halt until correct parts are ordered, shipped to the customer and eventually make their way to our mechanic.  In the meantime, our customer may go days without his/her vehicle and we are able to service fewer vehicles which may drive other aspects of our schedule out of alignment.  By contrast, we stock several parts, so if one component of a kit is not perfect, we can generally replace it pretty quick. Even when we don’t stock a particular part, we can almost always source replacements from one of our local suppliers or have it overnight shipped directly to us, which helps to reduce the delay time.
  3. Liability.  When an auto shop installs parts that were supplied by the customer, and those parts do not work properly, who is held responsible?  Even when the shop installs everything correctly and the part itself fails, from a legal standpoint, the shop is held accountable for the complete job (service and parts).  We’re not saying that everybody is trying to “pull one over” on the automotive shop, but you know there’s always that one bad apple that sets a precedent.
  4. Ultimately we are committed to providing total customer care.  What this means to us is: When customers have questions, we answer them.  When we quote a price, we stand beside that quote.  If something we installed or worked on doesn’t function properly, we’ll do what it takes to make things work right.  Taking care of our customers is our top priority and when we provide parts, we can confidently stand behind their quality before, during and after installation.

When does a FREE automotive estimate become a billable diagnostic service?  Each auto shop could probably answer this question differently.

At Axleboy, free estimates typically take place at the service counter.  Whether your vehicle needs repair services or you’re trying to discover the next step in off-road modifications, you can call or walk in and one of our service writers will be more than glad to take the time to understand your vehicle needs.

A classic example of a free repair estimate would look something like this: A customer breaks an axle while wheeling over the weekend and would like to know what it will cost to replace both front and rear axles with Tera 60 axles.  Our service writer would then provide an estimate that includes the cost of all parts and book-labor time. At that point the customer could then make an educated decision to proceed or pursue an alternative option.

By contrast, when a customer comes into the shop with either a check engine light or a mystery noise, we can speculate only so much before the vehicle needs to come into the shop for further clarification or discovery.  It is at this point, that a free estimate typically becomes a billable diagnostic service.

Most shops bill diagnostic services based on an hourly rate, so we recommend that before you hand over the keys, first review with the mechanic or service writer their diagnostic plans, including estimated cost.

Jeep Jamboree Schedule

We’re noticing a lot more green on the ground and in the trees.  To us, that means only one thing… the wheeling season is finally in full bloom.  How often will you be hitting the trails this year?

Missouri offers a wide variety of options when it comes to wheeling, and with a little effort you could easily spend EVERY weekend, from now through September, out on a trail.

If you are new to the area or new to off-roading, “local” parks like Washita, Central Missouri Off-road, Flat Nasty, Moonlight and SMORR host group events throughout the year.  This is a great opportunity to get out, enjoy nature and get to know other Jeep-lovers.  Many of these parks also offer open wheeling on select weekend, for the lone-wolf wheelers out there…but we always recommend wheeling with at least one other Jeep.

If you have a more adventurous spirit, and the flexibility to travel, consider participating in one or more of the many Jeep Jamborees going on throughout the country in places like Big Bear Lake, California, Tillamook, Oregon, Moab, Utah, Monticello, New York and a whole host of places in between.  For a comprehensive list of dates and locations follow this link to the Jeep Jamboree website.

Keep it Cool this Summer

Don’t Overheat this Summer

With the summer heat sending temperatures in St. Louis through the roof, knowing how to assess the overall health of your vehicle is a vital part of making sure everyone remembers this year’s summer trip for all the right reasons.

At Axleboy, we’ve noticed that summer is one of the busiest times of year at our auto shop.  “Why is that,” you might ask?  We believe that most major engine problems start with minor issues in the cooling system, and that many of those minor problems go undiagnosed during the fall, winter and spring months.

Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council advises:

“Neglecting your cooling system can result in serious damage and even complete engine failure, which would put a sudden end to your summer road trip.   If the cooling system doesn’t receive regular maintenance, it’s not a question of whether it will fail, but rather when it will fail. Performing regular checkups of belts, hoses, the water pump and fluids will ensure your car remains properly cooled and healthy for many miles down the road.”

Under normal driving conditions, most engine temperatures fluctuate between 190 and 215°F.  If the engine cooling system isn’t working just right, those temperatures can soar, causing a multitude of malfunctions.

 

Symptoms of a Sick Cooling System

To help prevent coolant-related breakdowns this summer, pay close attention to these common symptoms before you hit the road: frequent overheating, constantly low coolant levels and the sweet smell of syrup.  All of these are symptoms of a sick cooling system that should receive immediate mechanical attention.

 

Routine Maintenance

According to the Car Care Council, “A major factor that affects the replacement of cooling system parts is the frequency of regular maintenance, such as coolant changes.”  We advise motorists to follow the service schedule in their owner’s manual for specific recommendations about how often to change antifreeze and flush the coolant system (typically every couple of years).  These schedules are formulated by the manufacturer to optimize engine performance and reliability.

In addition, motorists should regularly (like once a month) check the coolant levels at the reservoir and top off as needed.  The reservoir can be topped off with a 1:1 mixture of antifreeze and distilled water.  Using tap water is discouraged because, over time, the mineral deposits left behind when tap water evaporates can clog lines, leading to additional problems.

So you’re out and about running errands or just tooling around St. Louis and your stomach starts letting you know that it’s ready to be refueled.  You’re not ready to go home and dig around in the refrigerator but you also don’t want to spend a lot of cash eating out.  What do you do?

Do you swing by a Mickey D’s or head to the nearest White Castle?  At Axleboy, we may not be hipsters or trendy urbanites, but living in such a culture rich place and being Jeep fanatics, we see nothing wrong with trying something off the beaten path every now and then.

Adriana’s on the Hill

This charming family-owned Italian Deli is located on the Hill at 5101 Shaw Ave and has absolutely raving reviews for their sandwiches.  Their casual, family friendly atmosphere makes it a perfect place to meet up with old friends or swing by for lunch.  Adriana’s is open Monday thru Saturday from 10:30am – 3:00pm and has a mouthwatering menu that is sure to have you coming back for more.

 

Mama Toscano’s Ravioli

St. Louis is known for quite a few things including frozen custard, Cardinals fans, and the Arch…but one thing that really sets us apart from any other city is…Ravioli. You may we’re kidding, but once you go to Mama’s no other ravioli will ever be so satisfying.  This quaint little shop on the Hill is located at 2201 Macklind Ave and is open Tuesday – Saturday from 7:00am – 6:00pm.  We love the fact that all their products are made fresh with just the right combination of dough and meat to send your taste buds into a paradise of perfectly blended flavor.

 

Urban Eats Café & Bakery

Located at 3301 Meramec (just east of Grand), in the Dutchtown neighborhood, Urban Eats is a little off the beaten path, but well worth the trip.  If you are in the mood for rice bowls, wraps, flatbread pizza or Panini then please allow us to introduce you to a small taste of heaven.  When you go out to Urban Eats, we suggest either wearing a belt or pants with a stretchy waist band because their menu will not only fill your mouth with a perfect blend of flavors, but also fill your stomach, almost to the point of bursting.

 

Banh Mi So 1

Also located in the Dutchtown neighborhood is this little Vietnamese gem, located at 4071 S. Grand.  Banh Mi is a true mom and pop shop that offers an assortment of authentic Vietnamese lunch and dinner dishes at a reasonable price (less than $10 each).  If you are in the mood for a mouthwatering treat, we recommend the Banh Xeo, their signature pan fried crepe that is stuffed with deliciousness.

 

Seoul Taco

If you happen to be in or near the Loop, stop by 571 Melville and grab lunch, dinner or even a late night snack at Seoul Taco.  This business got its start serving a blend of Korean and Mexican food out of a taco truck that grew so popular that they decided to set up a brick and mortar shop.  If you’re looking to spice up your taco or burrito experience, head over to Seoul and get there early because seating is limited.  Open 11am-10pm Monday – Saturday and 11-8pm on Sunday.
