A few days ago we received a call from Taylor at GenRight Off Road, a California based company that specializes in creating innovative, high-quality products for the true off-road enthusiast.

 

After a casual conversation about Axleboy and GenRight, comparing policies, quality standards, business goals, and our mutual passion for the off-road lifestyle, Taylor dropped the big question: “Are you interested in being our exclusive authorized dealer and installer for the state of Missouri?

 

Our jaws dropped at the surprise and for a moment there was utter silence.

 

Having seen firsthand GenRight’s attention to detail and quality performance, of course we gladly accepted.

Can You Install This For Me?

Every so often we’ll have a customer come in with a Jeep full of parts that they just ordered online and ask us how much it will cost to have it all installed.  We are excited that people continue to take an interest in modifying their Jeeps and that our reputation for quality workmanship has spread throughout the Jeep community.  We don’t like to turn away opportunities to work on Jeeps, but in 2015 we adopted a fairly standard industry policy regarding parts installation.

Our installation policy, in its most basic form, is this:

“We do not install customer supplied parts.”

Regardless if you purchased your parts direct from Jeep or through Quadratec, e-bay, Amazon or Craigslist, we simply don’t install customer supplied parts.  For those interested in knowing the “why” behind this policy, we offer a general explanation below.

Installing Customer Supplied Parts is Bad for Business.

We’re not saying that the stuff customers find online is cheap or low quality or that it won’t work.  Plenty of people buy stuff online, install it in their garage and are perfectly happy.  We are happy for these folks and enjoy spending time on the trails with them.

The reasons we don’t install customer supplied parts are both legal and business in nature.  In terms of legality, the state of Missouri holds shops (like Axleboy) responsible for all aspects of a job, including parts and labor, regardless of where the parts originate.  So, even if we, as a shop, were to install a customer’s parts as specified by the manufacturer, if the part itself failed, legally, we would be held liable.  It sounds ridiculous…until it happens.

From the business perspective, Axleboy and other professional shops exist because there is some element of profitability that allows us to purchase specific tools, pay certified technicians and maintain a brick and mortar location. Remove marginal profitability and reputable off-road shops will quickly disappear.  That doesn’t sound like a very good business plan to us.

Our Reputation is Based on Quality. Quality People. Quality Parts. Quality Service.

At Axleboy, we work hard to build and maintain quality working-relationships with several aftermarket manufacturers, so that when parts don’t fit right or packages arrive with damaged or incomplete sets, we can still get the job done right and in a timely manner.  Our sights are focused on total quality and customer satisfaction.  When customers go to online vendors to save a couple bucks, they unknowingly interfere with our ability to guarantee quality.  This is a reputational risk that we are simply unwilling to accept.

We want you to know, that we don’t think anything less of people or Jeepers for purchasing parts online.  Please understand when we politely decline to install them.

OME is pleased to release a new range of adjustable control arms with Max C Dual Durometer bushes for the JK Wrangler.

Adjustable control arms are perfect for those Jeep owners who want to customize caster and pinion angles to fine tune ride and handling for both on and off-road applications.  All arms have been shot peened, zinc electroplated and powder coated to prevent corrosion.

 

Max C Bushes:

MAX-C is a Dual Durometer composite bushing engineered for optimal ride quality and off-road durability in heavy duty applications.

The MAX-C is constructed of multiple urethane compounds and materials to deliver significant dampening and elastic characteristics that enable the joint to perform in a more linear torsional spring rate. The Free Pivot design eliminates pre-mature bushing failures from twisting loads particularly on long travel suspension arms or track bars and is ideal for heavy duty off-road performance. Synthetic Elastomer formulation consistently recovers to co-centric position effectively Self Centring the joint. Reinforcement Tube redistributes load evenly throughout the cushion and prevents contaminants entry into the joint by effectively minimizing gaping of the hole during misalignment configuration.

New Parts Policy

Experiencing a vehicle breakdown can be both stressful and expensive.  One way that some folks attempt to alleviate the financial burden of paying for repairs is by ordering and supplying their own parts.

It’s nearly impossible for local shops to compete with the majority of prices found on sites like Amazon, Ebay and Northridge4x4. For the DIY or shade-tree mechanic, this offers an easy way to cut costs, but we’re finding more and more legitimate businesses are turning down work to install “customer supplied” parts.

Work is work, right? So who cares where the parts come from?  There was a time when we would have agreed and gladly taken any type of work that came through the door.

For the past couple of years, we have struggled to find that perfect balance between quantity and our commitment to quality.  At long last, we have reached the determination that quality is truly our primary corporate social responsibility.  With that being said, Axleboy no longer installs “customer supplied” parts.

This decision was reached based on the following factors:

  1. Axleboy has spent years developing and maintaining vendor relationships.  This is significant because when our technicians have problems with how a part installs or performs on a vehicle, we can obtain technical support, send it back and/or negotiate product upgrades.
  2. Incorrect parts cost too much time and money for everyone involved.  If we are doing anything on a vehicle related to suspension or drivetrain, once we put that vehicle on the lift, it tends to stay there until the job is complete.  When a customer supplies their own parts and things don’t match up perfectly, production comes to a halt until correct parts are ordered, shipped to the customer and eventually make their way to our mechanic.  In the meantime, our customer may go days without his/her vehicle and we are able to service fewer vehicles which may drive other aspects of our schedule out of alignment.  By contrast, we stock several parts, so if one component of a kit is not perfect, we can generally replace it pretty quick. Even when we don’t stock a particular part, we can almost always source replacements from one of our local suppliers or have it overnight shipped directly to us, which helps to reduce the delay time.
  3. Liability.  When an auto shop installs parts that were supplied by the customer, and those parts do not work properly, who is held responsible?  Even when the shop installs everything correctly and the part itself fails, from a legal standpoint, the shop is held accountable for the complete job (service and parts).  We’re not saying that everybody is trying to “pull one over” on the automotive shop, but you know there’s always that one bad apple that sets a precedent.
  4. Ultimately we are committed to providing total customer care.  What this means to us is: When customers have questions, we answer them.  When we quote a price, we stand beside that quote.  If something we installed or worked on doesn’t function properly, we’ll do what it takes to make things work right.  Taking care of our customers is our top priority and when we provide parts, we can confidently stand behind their quality before, during and after installation.

At Axleboy, we believe that quality matters.  That’s why we prefer to stick with those brands that have been pressed to the limits and proven themselves over time- brands like Cooper, Teraflex, ARB and Warn.

Every now and then, a supplier or customer will suggest selling a product that we aren’t familiar with.  For example, one of our suppliers recently suggested that we look into the Atturo Tire brand as a competitive option for light trucks and SUVs.

We really don’t know much about the Atturo brand, aside from the assertions made on their website…so we decided to have Scott try them out on his F-350 before we make any recommendations.
