How to Choose the Right Tires

In no way is this quick reference guide intended to be comprehensive.   There are several M/T, A/T, and hybrid tires available on the market, from a variety of manufacturers.  We recommend that you talk to a local off-road shop or Jeep club to discuss the best tire options and availability in your geographic area.

TeraFlex – Falcon Series Shocks

Teraflex Falcon Series 3.1 Piggyback Shocks
Original Press Date: November 2016

The Falcon Series 3.1 piggyback shock is designed and engineered to deliver race inspired performance and handling while exclusively built to the specific requirements of the Jeep Wrangler. Vehicle stability is the paramount goal with all Falcon shocks.
For years shocks have been simply ‘adapted’ with minimal tuning and not specifically designed for an application. Falcon Shocks changes that mentality. The Falcon Series 3 Piggyback shocks are corner specific, built from the ground up, and deliver the best damping characteristics possible with fitment and function outlining the highest priorities. A lengthy and painstaking development process has finally delivered these new advancements to a waiting Jeep market.
The front shock features a unique piggyback design with the reservoir positioned horizontally to increase clearance with large tires during articulation and turning. An offset upper stud positions the shock body away from the frame for maximum clearance.
The rear shock positions the body and reservoir at the bottom to eliminate shaft damage from rocks kicked up by the tires. The outboard mounting increases clearance for lifted vehicles with raised track bar brackets.
Falcon shocks feature Lucas Oil full synthetic shock oil for superior performance across all temperatures to reduce shock fade. The proprietary synthetic formula also contains special anti-wear and lubricity agents that produce excellent thermal stability.

Falcon Series 3 shocks are available in different performance levels including adjustable and non adjustable versions.

Axleboy Teams Up With Fox and JKS

Shock 2.0Quality & Performance on Every Terrain

Axleboy is extremely pleased to team up with JKS and Fox, makers of quality, performance suspension solutions for the Jeep and off-road communities.

While at the Louisville, KY: Unlimited Off-Road Expo in early June, Scott Carline, owner of St. Peters based Axleboy piqued the interest of representatives from the Fox and JKS brands.  A lively discussion ensued, business cards were exchanged and within minutes a professional connection had been forged.

In the past, Axleboy has depended on third party distributors to obtain Fox shocks and JKS aftermarket upgrades for their performance conscious customers.  Now, less than one month after having met in person, Axleboy is honored to be a direct dealer of both Fox and JKS performance brands.

A few days ago we received a call from Taylor at GenRight Off Road, a California based company that specializes in creating innovative, high-quality products for the true off-road enthusiast.

After a casual conversation about Axleboy and GenRight, comparing policies, quality standards, business goals, and our mutual passion for the off-road lifestyle, Taylor dropped the big question: “Are you interested in being our exclusive authorized dealer and installer for the state of Missouri?

Our jaws dropped at the surprise and for a moment there was utter silence.

Having seen firsthand GenRight’s attention to detail and quality performance, of course we gladly accepted.

Whether you’re the type of Jeeper who spends more time driving through creek beds and over mountainsides or you simply want superior quality off-road parts on your Jeep, check out the full GenRight product line and give us a call to get your next project going.

Notice:

Axleboy will be closed this Friday, June 3, 2016 so that our technicians can attend the Unlimited Off-Road Expo in Louiville, KY.

We apologize for any short term inconveniences that this may cause, and hope you will bear with us as we network with industry manufacturers, suppliers and innovators for a few short days.  We look at events, such as this, as opportunities to really connect with the latest trends and discuss areas of improvement.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We’ll be back to work, first thing Monday morning!

Can You Install This For Me?

Every so often we’ll have a customer come in with a Jeep full of parts that they just ordered online and ask us how much it will cost to have it all installed.  We are excited that people continue to take an interest in modifying their Jeeps and that our reputation for quality workmanship has spread throughout the Jeep community.  We don’t like to turn away opportunities to work on Jeeps, but in 2015 we adopted a fairly standard industry policy regarding parts installation.

Our installation policy, in its most basic form, is this:

“We do not install customer supplied parts.”

Regardless if you purchased your parts direct from Jeep or through Quadratec, e-bay, Amazon or Craigslist, we simply don’t install customer supplied parts.  For those interested in knowing the “why” behind this policy, we offer a general explanation below.

Installing Customer Supplied Parts is Bad for Business.

We’re not saying that the stuff customers find online is cheap or low quality or that it won’t work.  Plenty of people buy stuff online, install it in their garage and are perfectly happy.  We are happy for these folks and enjoy spending time on the trails with them.

The reasons we don’t install customer supplied parts are both legal and business in nature.  In terms of legality, the state of Missouri holds shops (like Axleboy) responsible for all aspects of a job, including parts and labor, regardless of where the parts originate.  So, even if we, as a shop, were to install a customer’s parts as specified by the manufacturer, if the part itself failed, legally, we would be held liable.  It sounds ridiculous…until it happens.

From the business perspective, Axleboy and other professional shops exist because there is some element of profitability that allows us to purchase specific tools, pay certified technicians and maintain a brick and mortar location. Remove marginal profitability and reputable off-road shops will quickly disappear.  That doesn’t sound like a very good business plan to us.

Our Reputation is Based on Quality. Quality People. Quality Parts. Quality Service.

At Axleboy, we work hard to build and maintain quality working-relationships with several aftermarket manufacturers, so that when parts don’t fit right or packages arrive with damaged or incomplete sets, we can still get the job done right and in a timely manner.  Our sights are focused on total quality and customer satisfaction.  When customers go to online vendors to save a couple bucks, they unknowingly interfere with our ability to guarantee quality.  This is a reputational risk that we are simply unwilling to accept.

We want you to know, that we don’t think anything less of people or Jeepers for purchasing parts online.  Please understand when we politely decline to install them.

New Product From ARB

OME is pleased to release a new range of adjustable control arms with Max C Dual Durometer bushes for the JK Wrangler.

Adjustable control arms are perfect for those Jeep owners who want to customize caster and pinion angles to fine tune ride and handling for both on and off-road applications.  All arms have been shot peened, zinc electroplated and powder coated to prevent corrosion.

Max C Bushes:

MAX-C is a Dual Durometer composite bushing engineered for optimal ride quality and off-road durability in heavy duty applications.

The MAX-C is constructed of multiple urethane compounds and materials to deliver significant dampening and elastic characteristics that enable the joint to perform in a more linear torsional spring rate. The Free Pivot design eliminates pre-mature bushing failures from twisting loads particularly on long travel suspension arms or track bars and is ideal for heavy duty off-road performance. Synthetic Elastomer formulation consistently recovers to co-centric position effectively Self Centring the joint. Reinforcement Tube redistributes load evenly throughout the cushion and prevents contaminants entry into the joint by effectively minimizing gaping of the hole during misalignment configuration.

Careers with Axleboy

You may have heard that Axleboy had a great year in 2015 and that we’re looking to grow in 2016.  The rumors are true!

We are at that point where we “either need to start turning work away or bring more people into the team,” said Scott Carline, owner of Axleboy. “And with Spring and Summer just around the corner, there are no plans to slow down production in the shop.”

With that in mind, Axleboy is looking for fresh talent in the automotive and off-road customization industry.  Anybody can be trained to turn a wrench, but we are extremely selective about who we invite to work on our team.

At Axleboy, quality is more than a goal or an obscure hope for the future. Our team members eat, sleep and breathe quality.  It is at the center of everything that we do and the defining element of who we are.

If you consider yourself a problem solving, quick moving, optimistic and skilled automotive technician…or you know someone who fits that description, we might have your next great opportunity.

Love Is Jeep

What is LOVE?

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, we asked several people to define “LOVE” in four words or less.  After careful consideration we arrived at a dramatic yet obvious conclusion.

All of us at Axleboy sincerely wish you and yours a very happy Valentine’s Day!

Choosing the Perfect Lift

Congratulations! You’ve got a new Jeep and now you’re ready to make it a one-of-a-kind custom ride.  Aftermarket suspension, tires, wheels, bumpers, LED lights and more.  With so many available upgrades and custom accessories, almost anything is possible.

We see hundreds of Jeeps every year, and enjoy guiding people as they take their ride through the transition from stock to stud.  Most folks that we see, buy a new Jeep with the intention of using it as a full-time daily driver and part-time off-road warrior; for camping, hunting, fishing, organized off-roading etc.  Sound familiar?

One of the first modifications on their “to do” list is: Raise the ride.  We think of this as a hinge decision that will effect almost every other major upgrade/modification, including tires size, axle upgrades and more.  One of the most common introductory Jeep lifts installed at Axleboy is the 2.5” Teraflex suspension lift.

Teraflex Lift 2.5in

2.5″ Suspension Lift

The 2.5″ Teraflex Lift is a Good Place to Start

Like we mentioned, the 2.5” Teraflex suspension lift is an introductory lift.  That being said, it offers a modest amount of additional clearance and is capable of tackling many off-road trails without losing the functionality you would expect from a daily driver.  Here are just a few points to consider before deciding on a 2.5″ liftt:

  • It provides enough lift to comfortably fit up to a 35” tire
  • It gives plenty of clearance to tackle most light-medium rated trails
  • Maintains low center of gravity
  • Fewer parts to install help keep costs down
  • Same/one-day installation
  • Excellent ride quality
  • No significant changes to drive line angles
3" Lift with Flex Arms

3″ Lift with Flex Arms

Just A Little Taller With a 3” Lift

Every inch of clearance counts when you are taking the road less traveled…but what about every ½ inch?  Before going for that additional ½ inch of clearance with a 3” lift consider this:

  • Changes in drive line angles may require a new front drive shaft
  • Additional parts involved in the lift amount to higher parts and labor costs
  • Comfortably fits up to a 35” tire
  • Allows for plenty of flex under the wheel well
  • Install may take up to 2 days

Can You Take Me Higher?…Say 4 Inches or More?

4" Long Arm Lift Kit

4″ Long Arm Lift Kit

Do you want to roll with the big dogs and go places that no stock Jeep would ever dream? Going bigger on both lift and tires may be the answer.  With a minimum 4” lift:

  • There is now enough space to fit 37” tires
  • Serious consideration should be given to upgrading both front and rear axles
  • We strongly recommend new front and rear drive shafts
  • Bigger tires will necessitate re-gearing the differential ratios. Proper gearing will give back some of the power that is lost when increasing tire circumference.
  • Significantly more parts (flex arms, brackets, exhaust spacer, etc) increases the overall cost of installation
  • Proper installation may take 3-4 days (actual install time may vary)
  • Be aware that your Jeep will have a higher center of gravity and you may not fit in the parking garage any more
  • Your Jeep will be nearly unstoppable off-road and you’ll be the envy of everyone you work with

We are a fully stocked and qualified Jeep modification shop. In addition to providing access to a huge selection of lift kits, we also do tires, wheels, axles, differentials, bumpers, fenders, recovery gear, LED lights and more.  Be sure to give us a call or stop by the shop before your next mod.

Ask the Experts

When Jeepers go off-road as a club or group, the rule of thumb is to keep less-experienced wheelers in the middle of the pack.  This gives “newbies” an opportunity to observe veteran Jeepers as they maneuver through trail obstacles; noting wheel placement and approach angles that do or do not work before attempting the obstacle themselves.

In similar fashion, when considering the next level in Jeep modification, it is not uncommon for Jeep owners to seek the advice of peers who have already traveled the same or similar path.  We naturally want to know what has worked well for others and what products to avoid.  For that “expertise”, one of the most common places Jeepers initially turn to is the Jeep forums.

The Jeep Forums

The idea itself is pretty good: Post a question about specific tires, wheels, accessories or upgrade plans and, theoretically, people with experience in those specific areas can comment and act as virtual spotters.

The only problem with this method of gathering information is that many individuals only have “experienctise” and lack credible expertise.  What this means is that when a person has a single experience (good or bad) they become either strong advocates or critics for a particular brand.  Additionally, some folks that comment on the forums may not have any first-hand experience with a product or brand but still voice a strong opinion based on something they heard from a friend or read online.

We’re not saying that the Jeep forums are bad.  In fact, they can be a really fun place to get new ideas or even refine some old ones.  We simply caution how much time should be spent trolling through the forums and how much credibility should be given to internet opinions.

Do A Little Research

We suggest following up on things that are posted on the forums with a little of your own research.  Once you have a concrete idea for your next modification, we recommend learning a little about the manufacturer.  How long have they been in business? Do they specialize in one type of product or cater to a variety of interests? This is also a good time to verify product specifications, vehicle compatibility and warranty information.

Ask an Industry Pro

If questions arise as a result of your personal findings, we recommend consulting with a credible source of information.  At Axleboy, we have modified HUNDREDS of Jeeps, working with a variety of manufacturers on a daily basis.  We know which products are engineered using quality material and craftsmanship… and which ones repeatedly have problems.  When questions of product quality or reliability arise, our professional staff are more than glad to offer insights based on over 11 years of vendor dealings, customer feedback and Jeep repairs.

Give us a call at 636-939-5337 to schedule a consultation with Scott, or stop by and chat with Greg next time you are thinking about Jeep mods.

Warranty Fact or Fiction

Mopar Lift Kits and Performance Parts

As Missouri’s off-road authority the guys at Axleboy are regularly asked about the Mopar lift kit.  Several dealership salesmen are indicating during the sales process that “Mopar lift kits are the only lift covered or approved under the manufacturer’s warranty.”

Sales people say a lot of things…some of which is absolutely true and much of which is less so. In considering what has been said about the Mopar lift, we feel obligated to point out that this particular lift is considered a “Mopar performance part,” identified as a part number that begins with the letter “P.”

Why is this significant?  Well, if you have a few minutes, call up the dealership parts department and ask them what the warranty is on Mopar performance parts.  You may be surprised with their response.

Still curious, but not interested in calling the dealership?  We’ve included an excerpt from page 38 of the of the Mopar Performance Catalog, which states:

MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTS LIMITED WARRANTY

NO PARTS WARRANTY – “AS IS”

“Mopar Performance parts are sold “as is” unless otherwise noted. This means that parts sold by Mopar Performance carry no warranty whatsoever. Implied warranties, such as warranties of merchantability are excluded. (An implied warranty of merchantability means that the part is reasonably fit for the general purpose for which it was sold.) The entire risk as to quality and performance of such parts is with the buyer. Should such parts prove defective following their purchase, the buyer and not the manufacturer, distributor or retailer, assumes the entire cost of all necessary servicing or repair. Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep® and Ram vehicle and parts warranties are voided if the vehicle or parts are used for competition. The addition of performance parts does not by itself void a vehicle’s warranty. However, added performance parts (parts not originally supplied on the vehicle from the factory) are not covered by the vehicle’s warranty, and any failure that they may cause is not covered by the vehicle’s warranty.”

Quickie Vacation

Back to School Vacation?

Even though it might not feel like it, summer is quickly coming to a close.  Schools all across the nation have opened their doors and youth of all ages will soon be swimming in homework assignments.  Listen closely and you can almost hear them groaning in despair at this very moment.

With summer break officially over it’s easy to adopt the mindset that there’s no more time for adventure.  This simply isn’t true.  There’s still time to squeeze in one more road-trip, a weekend camping adventure or even a quick beach run. Whether you stick around town or head out on a grand excursion, adventure can be found wherever it is sought out.

What can you do to make sure your last-minute summer plans don’t fall to pieces?

Step 1: Create a Plan

We’re not saying you need to create a detailed itinerary.  Think more along the lines of preparation, destination and when you’ll be returning.  A little bit of planning can go a long way.

Step 2: Arrange Transportation

How will you get to and from your destination?  Walk, bike, drive, fly or hike?  Whatever your mode of transportation, knowing that it is reliable is a pretty big deal.  There’s nothing more frustrating than getting everyone excited to go somewhere and then having to either cancel at the last moment or find yourself stranded on the side of the road.  If there is any hint of doubt before you set out, have a specialist inspect the critical components.

Step 3: Be Flexible

Some of the greatest adventures happen when we deviate from the original plan, the proverbial highway in favor of a less traveled path.  The length of your vacation isn’t nearly as important as the quality.  Allowing your plans to be flexible is one of the best ways to keep your vacation fun and relaxing. Isn’t that the whole point?

Night Drop

How To Use the Night Key-Drop

Key Drop InfographicCongratulations!  Your Jeep is ready for the next upgrade. The next step is to talk with the guys at Axleboy, get on their schedule and make the drop off.

The majority of vehicles we work on get dropped off during standard business hours (between 8:00am and 6:00pm), but for some folks standard hours just don’t work.  That’s where our night key-drop comes into play.

Instructions for using the night drop are fairly basic:

  1. Locate the black box labeled “Key Drop” next to our main entrance.
  2. Open the box and fill out one of the envelopes inside with your personal & vehicle information.
  3. Insert your vehicle key(s) into the envelope.
  4.  If you have wheel locks, put the wheel lock key in the envelope as well.
  5. Seal the envelope and push it through the mail slot in our front door.

It’s really that simple.  90% of night-drop users will read this short article and think “Well duh”… but roughly 1 in 10 will leave the envelope blank, forget the wheel lock, shut the envelope in the black box or leave the keys and envelope outside the front door.

The whole idea here is that we are trying to provide you with a safe, secure and convenient way to drop off your vehicle outside of standard business hours.  Thankfully, our neighborhood is pretty tranquil and we don’t see much crime…but by the same token, following the 5 simple steps outlined above will help us keep it that way.

We’re excited to help take your Jeep to the next level and, if you use the night key-drop, we’ll look forward to seeing your keys first thing in the morning.

Don't forget to wave.

The Jeep Wave

We recently had a new Jeep owner come in to Axleboy with a complaint about the “Jeep-wave”.

It doesn’t work” he said, “I wave at other Jeeps all the time and never get a wave back.  Don’t people do the Jeep wave anymore?

There is some speculation that the wave may have been around even longer than the Jeep brand itself.  Whether that is a fact or not, we really don’t know…but we do know that the Jeep-wave is very much alive and well within the local Jeep communities.

Why do some Jeep owners neglect to return the wave?

Maybe it’s just an off day.  Or perhaps they just weren’t paying attention when your drove by.  Also, depending on what forums you read, there are certain rules that determine which Jeeper should initiate a wave and whether you can expect a wave in return.

One Jeep page we found, JeepTalk.org, has an actual list of qualities to determine a Jeep’s level of awesomeness and corresponding wave hierarchy- based on vehicle appearance (is it muddy?), age (older is better) and modifications.  They indicate that some Jeeps may simply not qualify for a return wave based on low or negative scores.

Regardless of where your Jeep lands on the awesomeness scale, we remind all Jeep owners that when they purchased their Jeep, new or used, they implicitly agreed to carry on the tradition of the wave.  As a general rule, we encourage you not to be that Jeeper that leaves other folks hanging with their hand in the air.

Happy Jeeping!!

Jeep Wave

Over the Top!

What’s on your agenda once the weather turns warm and we start seeing more nice weekends?  Whether you plan to go fishing, hunting, camping, off-roading or some combination, Axleboy is equipped to customize your Jeep and keep it running strong.

If you are thinking about taking your Jeep on a destination trip this year, there are several things to think about before you leave the comforts of home.  Depending on the type of terrain you plan to cover, you may be considering a suspension upgrade, Yukon gears, new tires or a WARN winch.  These are all “must have” modifications if you plan to take things off the beaten path.  What more could you possibly want on your Jeep?

Our parts manager, Joel suggests, “How about a roof-top tent?  It’s a pretty cool idea if you plan to go on an expedition.”  Yeah, that’s right…a roof-top tent.  Forget about having to stake out that perfect spot to erect a tent on the rocky slopes of Montana or the rain saturated ground of Missouri in springtime.

The roof-top tent offers any outdoor expeditionist a flat, pebble and root-free place to lie down at the end of a long day.  It also provides a valuable element of convenient protection from wildlife (Lions and Tigers and Squirrels…oh my!), flash floods and muddy ground.

While most industries claim to think outside the box (a.k.a. Jeep), the experts at Axleboy are happy to build all around it, under the hood and even on the roof.  Give us a call at (636) 939-JEEP for an estimate on the installation of your new roof-top tent.
