How to Flat Tow Your Jeep Wrangler

Step By Step Directions For Flat-Towing Your Jeep Wrangler

Getting Set Up to Tow

  1. Insert Jeep key in the ignition switch and
  2. Turn the key to the accessory position.
  3. Depress the brake pedal and hold.
  4. Set the parking brake.
  5. Shift the automatic transmission into Neutral (N), or, if you have a manual transmission, depress the clutch pedal.
  6. Shift the transfer case into Neutral (N).
    1. From the Jeep manual: The transfer case NEUTRAL (N) position disengages  both the front and rear driveshafts from the powertrain and will allow the vehicle to move despite the transmission position. The parking brake should always be applied when the driver is not in the vehicle.
  7. Start the engine and release the parking brake.
  8. Shift the automatic transmission into Drive (D) or, if you have a manual transmission, put it in gear.
  9. Slowly release the brake pedal and confirm that the vehicle does not move.
  10. **IMPORTANT**: Shut the engine off and place the ignition key into the unlocked OFF position. (See note below)
  11. Shift the automatic transmission into Park (P).
  12. Apply the parking brake.
  13. Attach the Jeep to your tow vehicle with a tow bar.
  14. Release the parking brake.

Note: Do not shift the transmission into Park (P) with the transfer case in Neutral (N) and the engine running. Doing this may cause damage to your transmission.

Unhooking Your Jeep After Towing

Once you reach your destination, and want to unhook your Jeep from the tow vehicle, here’s what you should do:

  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Disconnect the tow bar.
  3. Release the parking brake.
  4. Shift the automatic transmission into Neutral (N) or, if you have a manual transmission, depress the clutch pedal.
  5. Shift the transfer case lever into your desired position (2H, 4H, or 4L).  Note: Some people report that this is easier to do after starting the engine.
  6. Shift the automatic transmission in to Drive (D), or release the clutch.
