Jeep Safari with Two Rivers Jeep Club

Twice each year, Two Rivers Jeep Club, based out of Pittsfield, Illinois, invites Jeepers from all over to come and wheel on privately owned and maintained trails.  This year Axleboy Off-Road was invited to attend and represent Yukon Gear & Axle products as a local supplier.

When we arrived for registration on Thursday afternoon, the American Legion parking lot was already packed with Jeeps from every generation.  We saw LOTS of TJs, plenty YJs and XJs, a few CJs and even a good turnout of JKs, ranging from bone-stock to barely recognizable crawlers.  Without a doubt, this was an extremely diversified group of Jeepers and we were stoked to set up right in the center of it all!

The following morning (Friday), we got up bright and early to see what trails were available.  We arrived shortly after 7:00 am and were pleasantly surprised to find volunteers at the American Legion serving up a healthy breakfast and THREE parking lots packed with Jeeps! To anyone passionate about the Jeep lifestyle, it truly was a beautiful sight.

Knowing that at the end of the day we would have to drive the Jeep back home, we signed up for a 2+ rated trail: Dutch Creek, along with nine other rigs.  By 9:00 am, the entire congregation had reviewed safety standards and was making its way out to various trails.

With light rain showers throughout the day, trails were nice and muddy and obstacles were slightly more challenging, but everyone was had a fun time wheeling. We can’t wait to go again and see more of these awesome trails.  If you’re interested in participating, the next major event with Two Rivers Jeep Club will be their 4×4 Blast on August 9-11, 2018.

Factor 55 Closed System Winching

If you drive a Jeep, it’s likely that you’ve seen plenty of recovery videos on YouTube where something goes wrong.  While there will always be some element of risk involved with winch recovery, many of those risks can be minimized through exercise of safe winching practices and proper equipment.

In an effort to promote safer trail recovery, Axleboy Off-Road is excited to announce that they are partnering with Factor 55 Precision Engineering to deliver high quality closed-system winching solutions.

What is Closed System Winching?

Closed system winching is a winching technique that uses rigging comprised entirely of closed link hardware. With this system you can use your existing winch and cable/rope while replacing the hook with a Factor 55 winch-line shackle mount made from high-quality billet 6000 series aluminums and 6AL-4V Titanium.

Isn’t the Hook Good Enough?

People have been using hooks for a long time.  The common “clevis hook slip” that comes with most winches was originally designed and manufactured for use in commercial settings, to hoist heavy payloads secured by chain link.  In this setting, the hook has proven to be dependable largely due to the nature of the task.

For decades, off-road enthusiasts have taken this commercial tool and put it to alternative recreational use. Under such recovery type conditions, the hook is prone to failure because of the non-closeable opened end.  Even hooks with a safety latch cannot be considered a closed system because of the inherent weakness of the clasping mechanism.

Can the hook work? Yes! Will it work reliably? For that, there is no guarantee. The professionals at Axleboy Off-Road strongly suggest using a system that has proven to be safer, stronger and more secure.

Big Plans for 2018

We are so excited for the limitless possibilities of the new year, and hope that you are too!

As many of you know, this time last year, Axleboy moved from a small industrial park location with cramped bays and poor lighting to a beautiful big shop with 15 service bays and enormous glass doors.  To make the year even better, we spent more time on the trail than in any other previous year, going to places like:

  • Moab- for Easter Jeep Safari with Teraflex Suspensions
  • Asymetric Solutions (Washita)- to wheel with MWJT and Camp Hope
  • Monkey Mountain  & Moonlight- for the Jeeping 101 course with MWJT
  • SMORR- for Chicks in the Sticks, Jeepstock ’17 and again with 618Jeeps
  • And several Jeep show ‘n shine events in both Missouri and Illinois

Less than a full week into the new year, and we’re already looking forward to LOADS of upcoming events and opportunities to hang out with other Jeepers and off-road enthusiasts.  A few typical places you can expect to find us include:

  • Our shop- We’re here from 8:am-6:pm M-F and we love to talk Jeep!
  • The Annual Chili Cookoff- Feb. 24th 11am-2pm, Right here at Axleboy
  • Intro to Off-road (Jeeping 101) with Midwest Jeepthing
  • Jeepstock- Every September at SMORR
  • and more

This year we’re looking forward to seeing even more trails as we get to know the Two Rivers Jeep Club at their 4×4 Safari and later make a special trip out to experience the legendary Rubicon.  Keep a lookout for Scott’s white JKU, and feel free to stop and say, “Hi” when you see us out and about.

Follow us on Facebook and/or Instagram to get a steady stream of fresh Jeep pictures and see the latest happenings in the shop.

The White Whale Goes GenRight

If you’ve ever been wheeling with Scott Carline, owner of Axleboy, it probably didn’t take long to notice that he doesn’t take any trail half-way.  If there’s an obstacle that other Jeepers are dodging out on, you can almost guarantee he’s the one that will put on a show and give it a shot.

With this mentality and driving style, protecting his Jeep is an investment Scott takes seriously, which is why “The White Whale” (his 2013 JKU) recently underwent another phase of transformations.  New to the Whale are GenRight aluminum fenders, rock sliders and an ultra low-profile front bumper.

Prior to this change, Scott’s Jeep was outfitted with aluminum fenders made by Nemesis Industries, an aluminum stubby bumper from Teraflex Suspensions and stock Rubicon rock rails.

Why the Sudden Change?

When asked about the reason behind his change in parts, Scott noted, “The Nemesis fenders have the best fit and finish I have EVER seen, but I’ve developed a habit of catching the lip on rocks and feeling bad about beating them up.” He further stated, “I’ve had my eye on the structural qualities of the tubular design for some time and feel like they might roll off things better.  As the only authorized GenRight installer/dealer in the area, it just made sense to give them a shot.”

As for the new side armor and rock guards, Scott was impressed by the replaceable steel “rash guard”, something that offers additional protection and reinforcement of the body armor.  “I haven’t seen any other manufacturers offer this,” says Scott, “And you can bet these rails will take some pretty hard hits.”

Changing the front bumper all comes down to two words, “approach angle.” “There was absolutely nothing wrong with the Teraflex bumper that I had before, but this new ultra slim bumper gives me nearly six inches of additional clearance in front.  That’s huge when you’re trying to pick your line to get up and over an obstacle,” says Scott.

Keep it Raw or Make it White?

The original vision behind The White Whale was to create a well-built Jeep with the classy look of a Sahara.  With the first round of modifications almost everything that went on it, first took a trip to the powder-coater to match the white body.

We asked Scott if he intended to do the same thing with the latest round of upgrades and he replied, “I was really tempted to do the same thing and white it out.  With the trend being to black out everything, I found that doing the complete opposite helped my Jeep stand out from the crowd and brought a lot of positive attention.  I priced out getting the new stuff powder coated too,” he says, “but impatience got the best of me and the bare aluminum look is really starting to grow on me, so I’ll probably leave it just the way it is.”

Check it out in Person

Those who follow Axleboy on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Google Plus…and even Pinterest) expect to see new pictures all throughout the day, highlighting work in progress, completed projects and a variety of off-road adventures…  But there’s nothing like seeing a product in person! “Any time you are in the area,” says Scott, “stop by and check out the Jeep in person.  Everybody here loves talking Jeep.”

Axleboy is located in O’Fallon Missouri, on the North side of I-70 (1935 E Terra Ln., O’Fallon, MO 63366).

How to Choose the Right Tires

In no way is this quick reference guide intended to be comprehensive.   There are several M/T, A/T, and hybrid tires available on the market, from a variety of manufacturers.  We recommend that you talk to a local off-road shop or Jeep club to discuss the best tire options and availability in your geographic area.
